December’s primary birthstone, Tanzanite, was discovered in the late 1960s and is exclusively found in it’s namesake country, Tanzania. This type of gemstone is often heated to achieve the rich violet-blue color for which Tanzanite’s are known.

Tanzanite is often less expensive than sapphires, and is often viewed as their replacement, but nowadays Tanzanite’s growing popularity is due to it’s own beauty. Experts say that the deep blue and slightly purple hue of Tanzanite is one of the most extraordinary colors available, signifying elegance. Known for it’s healing properties, Turquoise is another popular birthstone for the month of December and is one of the oldest known gemstones in the world. This precious stone that dates back to the thirteenth century is known for serenity, spiritual bonding and enhancing creativity. The name of the gemstone comes from a French expression ‘Pierre tourques’ meaning ‘Turkish stone.’

The color of turquoise does varies in different shades of blue from greenish blue to sky blue, with the most notable being robin’s egg blue. This gemstone is one of the softer stones, making vintage pieces so rare because of their delicacy. Turquoise is also known as the wedding anniversary gemstone for the fifth and eleventh year of marriage. Click here to view our selection of turquoise.

Celebrating the Halcyon Days

THE HALCYON DAYS

According to legend, during the fourteen days around the winter solstice, the kingfisher, in Greek the halcyon, laid its eggs in a nest floating on the Aegean Sea. The bird, it is said, charmed the waves and the eggs were hatched on a tranquil sea beneath cloudless blue skies. How lovely it is to celebrate the December holidays with gifts named for this season of peace and happiness:  Halcyon Days.
HERITAGE

Over the generations, Halcyon Days has developed into an established British brand that has become synonymous with outstanding quality and charm. Each product is handcrafted in England and made using the finest materials. The company’s craftspeople and artists take great care and pride in delivering luxury products to the highest standard.

HISTORY

Halcyon Days was founded in 1950 by Susan Benjamin in London’s Mayfair and specialized in antique English enamels – in particular the charming keepsake in the form of a small box. The craft of hand-painting on copper, which flourished during the second half of the 18th century, had almost disappeared by the 1830s and consequently, antique enamels became extremely rare. It was this rarity that led to the revival in 1970 of the classic English craft, achieved by the unique collaboration of Halcyon Days and an enamel manufacturer.

HALCYON DAYS TODAY

Today, the enamels, including a line of stunning bangles designed by interior designer Charlotte Moss, are still being made in Halcyon Days’ own workshops using the best of British craftsmanship. They continue to be designed by talented artists above their flagship store in Brook Street. They are made by a team of highly skilled craftspeople, using traditional English enameling skills that have been handed down through generations.

As well as enamels, Halcyon Days has long produced a range of porcelain items, including exquisite miniatures, bonbonnières, trinket trays, vases and candleholders – many inspired by antique originals. Halcyon Days continues to celebrate the best craftsmanship and design offering its clients true works of art.

ROYAL WARRANTS
Halcyon Days has had a long and established relationship with the British Royal Family. They are proud to have been granted royal warrants by The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and The Prince of Wales as Suppliers of Objets d’Art.
