September proved to be a very exciting time for IWC. They provided us some photographs that came out of the Toronto International Film Festival, which we’re pleased to share with you here. In one of these photos, actor Bradley Cooper shows his true love of IWC by wearing the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch while at the Toronto International Film Festival, as he posed for photos with fans. He also wore an IWC Big Pilot’s Watch on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter.
IWC has also announced a Facebook application for people who already own an IWC watch and are interested in purchasing another piece from one of their storied watch families. This Facebook game, entitled “Which IWC Watch Are You?”, is designed to help you! Please click here for the link to this game.
IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph
Fans of the Volvo Ocean Race, which Boston’s Fan Pier had the good fortune (and smarts) to host in 2009, are no strangers to IWC Schaffhausen, the official timekeeper of the Volvo Ocean Race. An exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavor, the Volvo Ocean Race has been built on the spirit of great seafarers who sailed the world’s oceans aboard square rigged clipper ships more than a century ago.
IWC created the Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Edition Watch for the Volvo Ocean Race in tribute to today’s courageous participants in this grueling around-the-world race. Shreve, Crump & Low is honored to carry this coveted watch, engraved on the back with “Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012″, in our Newbury Street Watch Salon.
The new Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph has all the precision of a nautical instrument. Powered by the rugged IWC-manufactured 89360-calibre movement and water-resistant to 6 bar, the chronograph demonstrates its sporting qualities with a flyback function and an additional flange with quarter-second calibration for recording short periods of time. Longer stop times (hours/minutes) can be read off like a second time on a separate analogue subdial.
The titanium case and carbon fiber dial convey the spirit of high-end racing boats. The first 10 minutes of the chronograph counter are specially colored to help with calculating the time before the race starts. The watch case is 45.4 mm wide, has a 68 hour power reserve, and is self-winding.

With its passion for innovation and technical inventiveness, IWC Schaffhausen has established an international reputation for watches of the highest quality that last for generations. Founded in 1868 by a gentleman from Boston who moved to Schaffhausen to make watches for the American market, the Swiss watch manufacturers have been creating masterpieces of haute horlogerie that combine precision engineering with exclusive design. IWC collectors can attest to the innovation and expertise of the engineers in Schaffhausen who create robust watches for everyday use to professional sports watches to the complexities of Haute Horlogerie.
For 76 years now, the Schaffhausen-based watchmakers have been producing extraordinarily robust and reliable timepieces that have always met the requirements of contemporary pilots and aircrews. In 1936, IWC launched its first IWC Special Pilot’s Watch. It already had a tough glass, a rotating bezel with an arrowhead index for instantaneous legibility, and an antimagnetic escapement. In the pioneering days of aviation, the main priority was to protect watches against dust, extreme temperature fluctuations and the strong magnetic fields created by cockpit instrumentation.
We carry several lines of Pilot’s Watches at Shreve, Crump & Low, including the new TOP GUN Miramar line in an authentic military-style design. The new Miramar chronograph is characterized by the metallic tones of the ceramic case and the classic military colors. The unconventional division into an external chapter ring and an inner hour circle is a reference to the deck watches of the 1930s and 40s, and thus the historic legacy of IWC Pilot’s Watches. Other features include a flyback function and protection against magnetic fields.
